My favorite piece of clothing was a 1950’s leather jacket gifted to me by my grandmother. It was brown, and made of natural leather. It had embroidered hems and buttons. She had bought it when she was my age, and felt that it would look good on me. It felt like a piece of her. I’ve always loved the idea of loved vintage clothing; it almost has a life, a history, of its own.
When I started creating pieces, this idea came up in my mind a lot – to create clothing that would one day be passed on to someone else. Clothing that was able to withstand time, to live and last. It fascinates me to think that I could make something that would last that long. Which is why using natural fabrics is so important to me, other than it being eco friendly, they also live longer. And so, a piece made from natural fabric has much more longevity to it than anything else. This is the side of fashion I find most romantic, the timelessness of it all. I want to create clothing that will be handed over from generation to generation, that lasts that long, that is timeless and classic – so much so that people can wear it now, and in thirty years.
Fashion is one of the few artworks we carry with us every day in our lives, and that’s why I believe it plays such a big role in how we feel, and more obviously how we present ourselves. Every time I start working on a new piece, I can’t help but think of my grandmother’s vintage leather jacket, and how I hope that one day, something I make will be somebody’s favorite vintage piece of clothing. That is the type of print I want to leave on the world.
